We have now finished washing,  weighing,  counting and organising all the finds from the Gower Landscape Partnership Field Walking events at Monkland and Bank Farm.

174 Sherds of Pottery
73 Sherds of Ceramics
3 Pieces of Clay Pipe
38 Shards of Glass
19 Fragments of Animal Bone and Shell,
30 Fragments of Brick and Tile
27 Pieces of Iron and Metal
And finally……71 Flints!

Fantastic work everyone,  thank you for your help over the four days.

The finds have now be sent off for analysis to the relevant experts,  we will hear back soon and find out exactly what we have got!

Finds Processing and Analysis

We are back!

We had a brief hiatus in the project, whilst the finds recovered from the field walking event were being washed and processed.

Our project archaeologist Sarahjayne Clements took some of the finds to Knelston Primary School (Years 4 & 5), and some of the finds to the Young Archaeologists Club (YAC) in Swansea to wash and analyse.

Last week, we had our wonderful Heritage Champions come to the office to help sort through, categorise and weigh the finds.

Good results obtained again, with further finds recovered, ranging from flints to possible medieval pottery!

Finds Processing

These finds will now be sent to the relevant finds specialists, who can interpret the finds and produce a detailed report for us to use.

We will be holding a’ Flint Presentation’ at the National Museum Wales, Cardiff, sometime in June given by Elizabeth Walker, the Principal Curator: Collections & Access / Palaeolithic & Mesolithic Archaeology, for our flint artefacts.

A final date will be given sometime later this month, so keep watching this blog for updates!

Final Field Walking Day!

Sadly our field walking event has come to an end, but the last day proved as productive as the others!

Yet again we found more and more flints!

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who gave up their own time to our project.

Next Friday (11.03.16), we will be heading up to Knelston Primary school with the finds to get the children involved with finds washing and handling, as well as talking to them about our brilliant project.

Details of the next couple of events over the next couple of weeks will be posted regularly, so please keep visiting our blog!

Third day field walking!

Another fantastic day  field walking at Scurlage.

Perfect weather today for field walking, a drop of rain in the morning cleared up to a warm, dry day.

Three smaller ploughed fields revealed lots of different finds, ranging from possible Medieval pottery to Post-medieval clay pipes and flint knives- well done today’s team!

One larger field remaining for tomorrow, hopefully the rain stays away!

Second Day of Field walking

We have completed our second day at Monksland Farm, Scurlage!

There were some fantastic finds today, including more flint cores and a wonderful flint scraper.

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers over the weekend, without your incredible enthusiasm, it wouldn’t be possible to do the event and help to further our knowledge of this intriguing field.

If you would like to come along to the second field walking event between 1st-2nd March at Bank Farm, Scurlage, please contact Sophie at sophie@ggat.org.uk or 01792 655208.
